I am an English artist married to a Dane and have lived in Denmark since 1986. I have always drawn and painted, so it came as no surprise that I should follow an artistic career. After completing a five year art education in London, specializing in graphic design at Hornsey College of Art I left with a Diploma in Art and Design (Bachelor of Arts) and began a fifteen year long career working in the art departments of The National Magazine Company and IPC (International Printing Corporation) culminating in becoming an art director. In my free time I continued to paint and illustrate on a freelance basis, producing many greeting cards for Camden Graphics and some children's books.
I have always had a great love for animals, especially cats, great and small, and have painted many pictures of them. But it was only when I came to live in Denmark that I had the opportunity to come close to and work with my other great love, horses.

 

I was thirty seven when I came here and my husband presented me with a horse so at last I could fulfill a dream to learn to ride. It opened up a fascinating world for me, one which I will never tire of. Many of my friends have ridden all their lives and have chosen riding or horse breeding as a career and way of life. I am so grateful for the knowledge and understanding of the horse and it's world they have so generously passed on  to me.

  

All horses inspire a strong emotional response in me, from the awe inspiring beauty of a prize stallion or mare, to the adorable charm of an Islandic horse or a Shetland pony, I strive to express this wonder in my work

 

The way I work
As well as making many paintings from being inspired by things around me, I am frequently commissioned to draw and paint pictures, especially of people and animals.
Ideally, I meet the 'model' and take my own photographs and make sketches to work from, this gives me a special insight into my subject. However it isn't always possible to do this. Sometimes the subject of the commission is just too far away to make traveling  financially viable. In these instances I have to rely on photographs taken by someone else and sent to me.
On more than one occasion I've had requests to paint  portraits of  pets that have died and I'm sent photographs to work from. In these circumstances I have to trust the photographer has captured the spirit of the model and I do my best to transform the photo into an artistic picture which will bring back warm memories of that special personality that filled so much in it's owner's life.
